HF RADAR signals can be heard quite often on JOVE frequencies when ionospheric conditions are suitable. Two main RADAR types exist, Over The Horizon RADAR (OTHR) and Surface Wave RADAR (SW). The first utilises the Ionosphere to reflect the radiated signal 'over the line of sight horizon' whilst the second relies on ground wave or surface wave propagation of the radio signal. OTHR can have a detection range of several thousand kilometers whilst Surface Wave radars have a range of many hundreds of kilometers. Signals heard can be of varying types depending upon the 'mode' of Radar operation, typically 'surface' or 'air' mode. The audio clips demonstrate HF Radar signals heard within the JOVE frequency band.
